September 27th – Ann Bollin, our State House Representative, will be holding office hours at the Brighton Chamber of Commerce Building (Old White Building - East of Main) from 1 to 2 PM.
If possible, please attend her office hrs. meeting. She can be an asset in out fight in that there presently are three bills in front of the house that will allow the state to bypass local authorities in the leasing of state-owned properties for mining. (SB 429m 430 And 431) If this bill passes, the DNR cannot be stopped in locating gravel pits regardless of the population density.
An amendment to 2006 PA 110, known as “the Michigan zoning enabling act,” is proposed. It is Senate Bill 431.
This is a highly biased piece of legislation that would make it possible for a mine to open ANYWHERE in the state! Worse yet, it strips away all local zoning authority. There is no way to stop a mine from opening ANYWHERE someone wants it to. Click here to download a copy of Senate Bill No. 431 and read it for yourself.
